Join the DSO for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the dress rehearsal for our Saturday, October 10, 2015 "Two Times Tchaikovsky" concert. Watch the orchestra at work for the first hour, then join Maestra Schubert and the DSO musicians for refreshments, furnished by My Chef Catering, Naperville, and conversation at break time.

After you've had refreshments check out the string instrument petting zoo provided by our sponsor, StringWorks, Inc. If you've ever wanted to try your hand at playing a violin, viola, cello, or bass, now is your chance!

2012 Young Concert Artists International winner Aleksey Semenenko, praised by the Boston Musical Intelligencer for performances replete with “verve, wit, delicatesse, and beautiful phrasing,” opens the DSO Season with Tchaikovsky's exhilarating Violin Concerto in D Major. The Russian master's enchanting Symphony No. 2 in C minor, known as the Little Russian, incorporates a variety of charming Ukrainian folk songs.

Shostakovitch's pivotal Symphony No. 5, Op. 47 - the "Soviet artist's creative response to justified criticism" - provides a powerful conclusion to this memorable program.

In conjunction with the North Central College Office of International Programs' continuing study of Globalization, the "electrifying" young cellist Jay Campbell presents the Ballad, Dance, and Fantasy by acclaimed Chinese-American composer Chen Yi. The concert concludes with one of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century: the Suite from Stravinsky's The Firebird, which catapulted the previously unknown composer to international fame.

Memorable melodies by operatic masters of the 18th and 19th centuries - Bizet, Gounod, Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Puccini, Wagner, and Verdi - fill the evening. Acclaimed Chicago area soloists join the orchestra and chorus on stage.
