Maestra Barbara Schubert Selects ILMEA Award-Winning Composition, "The True Awakening to Greatness," for DuPage Symphony Orchestra's Upcoming Concert
The DuPage Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to announce that Maestra Barbara Schubert has selected the award-winning piece, The True Awakening to Greatness, as the featured world premiere composition for its upcoming concert. Composed by rising star and ILMEA Award recipient, Angel Alday of Chicago, this work captivates with its sweeping harmonies and rich orchestral textures.
“From the very first note, I knew this piece had something special,” shared Maestra Schubert. “It possesses a maturity and depth far beyond what you might expect from a young composer. The piece’s dynamic range, thoughtful thematic development, and poignant melodies offer our orchestra an opportunity to showcase its full spectrum of sound. I believe it will resonate profoundly with our local community here in DuPage County.”
Schubert, known for her discerning taste and keen ear for new talent, selected The True Awakening to Greatness for its bold exploration of the human spirit. This choice also highlights her commitment to supporting emerging composers and providing local audiences with innovative musical experiences. “One of the joys of programming is finding new voices that speak to the moment. Angel’s piece does just that—it’s modern yet timeless, pushing boundaries while staying true to the essence of symphonic music.”
The composition won First Place in the Instrumental Large Ensemble category at the 2023-24 Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) Composition Competition. The orchestra’s performance of The True Awakening to Greatness will be the piece’s orchestral debut, marking a pivotal moment in Alday’s burgeoning career.
Alday, a recent graduate of The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts®), has been heralded as a “composer to watch” by industry critics. His ability to balance complex motifs with melodic clarity has made this piece a standout.
