"Section Showdown" Fundraiser

DuPage Symphony Orchestra Launches "Section Showdown" Fundraiser to Support Local Musicians and the Future of the Arts

The DuPage Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is calling on music lovers to join the “2025 Section Showdown,” a spirited fundraiser designed to sustain the high-caliber symphonic music that has enriched the Naperville community for over seven decades. As costs for rehearsal space, sheet music, and concert production continue to rise, the DSO invites donors to support their favorite orchestra section—Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussion—while helping ensure the future of exceptional live performances and arts education.

This year’s “Section Showdown” provides a unique way for the community to engage with the orchestra while making a direct impact. From now through May 2025, donors can make a gift in honor of their favorite section, helping to offset the increasing costs of sheet music and licensing fees, rehearsal and performance space rentals, and educational programming that nurtures the next generation of artists. The section that raises the most support will receive special recognition at the DSO’s “Mexican Montage” concert on May 17, 2025, at Wentz Concert Hall.

“The musicians of the DuPage Symphony Orchestra dedicate countless hours to perfecting their craft, and this is a wonderful way for the community to show their appreciation,” said Julie Somogyi, DSO Board Director. “As a lifelong fan of the arts, I know the power that music has to uplift and inspire. A gift to the “Section Showdown” helps sustain the orchestra and ensures that future generations will continue to experience the joy and beauty of live music.”

Beyond its role in entertainment, the arts play a crucial role in mental well-being, offering a refuge from the challenges of daily life. Research has shown that exposure to live music can reduce stress, enhance cognitive function, and foster a sense of community—all of which are more important than ever. “We know that the arts are a salve for the soul, providing a much-needed escape from the struggles of the world,” said Mari Ullrick, Strategic Director of Operations and Engagement. “But to maintain the high level of cultural excellence that DuPage County deserves, we need to raise critical funds. The cost to support a volunteer musician for a season is now over $900 per season, covering essentials like sheet music, rehearsal space, and performance production. Without community support, maintaining this caliber of programming becomes increasingly difficult.”

In addition to providing world-class performances, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra remains committed to fostering the next generation of musicians. Through artist residencies, school outreach programs, and mentorship opportunities, the DSO is actively investing in young artists to ensure classical music thrives for years to come. “Our goal is to cultivate a future where the arts continue to thrive,” Ullrick added. “We’re creating opportunities for young artists to learn, grow, and carry the torch forward.”

Supporters can participate in the “Section Showdown” by donating online at dupagesymphony.org/donate. Every dollar raised helps sustain the orchestra’s ability to bring inspiring performances to the community while ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from exceptional music education and engagement opportunities.
