"Seven Passages" is a tone poem by Iranian composer Behzad Ranjbaran (born 1955), based on an episode known as the Seven Trials of Rostam from the Shahnameh, a poetic retelling of the mythology and history of Iran by the Persian poet Ferdowsi (940-1020 C.E.). The Shahnameh is considered the national epic of Iran, and it inspired the other two works in Ranjbaran's "Persian Trilogy," "The Seemorgh" and "The Blood of Seyavash." The mighty hero Rostam was a herculean figure, who single-handedly undertook the liberation of the army of Shah Kay Kavus, which had been captured while on an expedition to Mazandaran. Along the way, Rostam carries out seven labours: the slaying of a ferocious lion that attacked Rostam's horse named Rakhsh; surviving a journey through an inhospitable desert through the grace of God; slaying a dragon; overcoming the temptation of a demon disguised as a lovely enchantress; besting the Mazandarani champion Aulad and killing Arzand Div, the demon chief in Mazandaran; freeing the Persian Shah Kay Kavus from demons; and finally, slaying the mighty Div-e-Sepid, the White Demon, whose blood he used to restore the eyesight of the Shah.

Bring the whole family to the DuPage Symphony’s 2013 holiday concert and enjoy an array of familiar seasonal songs, carols, dances, and stories – with a decidedly modern twist! Soprano Valerie Vinzant, hailed by The Los Angeles Times for her “delectable lyric soprano” and her “pure silk voice”, joins the DSO to sing a variety of Christmas favorites – O Holy Night, Gesu Bambino, White Christmas, and more – and to present Jeff Tyzik’s delightful “Twelve Gifts of Christmas,” which blends excerpts from familiar classics of Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and others with a clever re-setting of the traditional holiday tale. Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s jazzy reinvention of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite anchors the second half of the DSO’s festive holiday program. Drawn from the pair’s landmark recording of 1960, the work is an ingenious transformation of the original ballet: the “Dance of the Reed Pipes” becomes a playful “Toot Toot Tootie Toot”; the “Waltz of the Flowers” turns into an energetic “Dance of the
Floreadores”; and the “Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy” evolves into an unforgettable “Sugar Rum Cherry”. Traditional Wassail Dances, the March of the Toys from Babes in Toyland, and – of course! – Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride round out the program. Be on the lookout for a special holiday visitor as well.
